Raising awareness: Fibromyalgia & Allodynia

2 Apr , 2016

I came across fibromyalgia and allodynia when I posted my article about the cold shower therapy. Rose Regan, from Spokane, Washington, in her mid-twenties shared her story with me. She has been constantly battling her conditions fibromyalgia and allodynia since childhood. She cannot withstand cold water or cold air. Her body aches if she takes a cold shower. According to statistics, around 3.7 million people suffer due to fibromyalgia in the US. Currently, 14 million people are prone to fibromyalgia in India. Let me tell you what are these two conditions and how you can try to reduce it with holistic practices.

What are fibromyalgia and allodynia?

Fibromyalgia is a condition which is characterized by muscular and skeletal muscle pain. There can be tenderness and sensitivity to touch on specific parts of the body. Healthcare providers diagnose fibromyalgia based on a combination of relevant symptoms like fatigue, tenderness, functionality, and overall well-being.

Allodynia is a pain which can be induced with anything which is generally not considered as painful. 80% people with migraine experience, at least, one symptom of allodynia during a headache attack. They may describe a pain to touches such as with resting one’s head on a pillow, or with wearing a hat, earrings, or necklace.

Who gets fibromyalgia and allodynia?

People with certain rheumatic diseases, such as rheumatoid arthritis, lupus or spondylitis (spinal arthritis) are likely to have fibromyalgia.

Getting allodynia is observed in people whose sensory neurons have been sensitized. Like in Rose’s case, she already had fibromyalgia. Parents with alcohol abuse while mother being pregnant induced fetal alcohol syndrome in her. This syndrome is a big reason for her sensitivity to cold water, cold air, weather anything. She has a case of so-called ‘thermal allodynia’.

Holistic practices which can help you control these conditions

Massages: I have written about taking myofascial massages earlier also. Nothing can take away the pain and help with the blood circulation better than massages.

Acupuncture: This is a very effective way of reducing fibromyalgia and allodynia pain. Rose agrees that acupuncture has helped her control the conditions.

Acupuncture has been most beneficial. I love it and definitely feel difference vs not going

Healthy diet: The biggest thing which can stimulate cells in the body is caffeine. She says, “Caffeine hurts my over stimulated nervous system.” She adds,” Lots of herbs in our food, like turmeric, coconut oil, hemp, flax, marshmallow, clover, dandelion etc has helped in my healing journey a lot.”

Aromatherapy: I believe in aromatherapy a lot and have been practicing for 3 years. Rose has admitted aromatherapy helps her too. Frankincense, lavender, spruce, and pine essential oils calm her nerves. She says,”Frankincense is amazing and helps a lot”.

Light workout: Any kind of workout increases blood circulation. Blood circulation helps to keep the pain under control.

I would not have come to know about the condition if Rose would have told me. I thank her for sharing her experience with the world. For most of the part of her life, she did not know about these conditions which aggravated them. Hence, I on her behalf wanted to raise awareness so that people do not have to endure such pain in their life. If you have some questions you can ask her directly. She will be more than glad to help.
