Soap nuts -how to use them?

19 Sep , 2015

In my second article about ‘no poo’ I had promised to share how I use soap nuts, also known as ‘Reetha’, in place of a shampoo. Here I will give you a step-by-step process to make a solution from soap nuts directly.

Steps to prepare solution from soap nuts

Step 1:
Soak soap nuts in water for 1-2 days. It softens the outer cover of soap nuts.

Step 2:
Cut the outer cover with a knife and take out the seed from it.

Step 3:
Take De-seeded soap nuts with water and boil it for 4-5 minutes.

Step 4:
Let the water cool. Then mash the boiled soap nuts to make a hazy solution.

Step 5:
Filter the hazy solution through a sieve, so that the mashed content is left behind the sieve and we get a soapy solution.

Store this soap nut solution in cool dark place in a bottle preferably in a glass one. I use old shampoo glass or plastic bottle.

How to wash hair with the solution prepared with soap nuts?

1. Pour on your hair in little quantity from bottle to hair directly. Taking out in hands can lead to loss of product, as it is quite thin and runny.
2. When you think your hair is soaked enough and solution is not running down your head and getting wasted, stop pouring.
3. Leave your hair with the reetha solution on for 10 minutes minimum for oily scalp (or you have oiled your hair at night) and 2-3 minutes for dry hair.
4. After suggested time just wash it with plain water.
You will be left with the silkiest hair after this. I usually pair this with ACV (apple cider vinegar rinse), which is 1:1 solution of ACV and water. I spray it all over my hair and leave for 3-4 minutes. This makes my hair shiny and soft.

I know it is a little long procedure but once your start following it, you will get accustomed. Moreover, if you want to go all-natural this is something you will thank yourself later.

NOTE: Reetha/soap nut is extremely irritating for eyes. Always take precaution while applying it on hair as it might run down and enter your eye. Despite of all the precautions if it enters your eyes immediately splash lots of water in your eyes and keep it close for few minutes. It will become red but gradually redness will reduce and everything will be fine. Nothing to worry. After all, that is the benefit of using a natural item.

Hope you try it and share your experience below in the comment section. If you have some other method of preparing/using soap nuts share that too!!

You can get them at your local grocery store. Ask for reetha. If not then try order online reetha powder offered by different brands. They are as effective and natural as soap nut sol. prepared at home.
